San Juan Capistrano Library
San Juan Capistrano, CA

The San Juan Capistrano Library was a project designed by Michael Graves Architect of Princeton, New Jersey. It is a single story wood frame structure, which completely is characteristic of the architecture of Michael Graves. It is not only a complete library, but surrounds a courtyard that has been used for civic music and theater presentations.

The structural design developed by Lawson Burke Structural Engineers by request and necessity is not exposed and appropriately provides the vertical and horizontal support required for a public building such as this. The unique trellis reading areas are freestanding structural elements that completely conform to the architectural intent. In addition, the interior of the building reflects the three turrets developed in the roof.
